What Actually Damages an Induction Cooktop’s Glass Surface

Induction cooktops don't get hot the way a radiant surface does, but the glass itself is still vulnerable to a short list of specific, avoidable habits.

Because induction glass stays cooler to the touch than the pan sitting on it, it’s easy to assume it’s more durable than it actually is against a few specific risks.

Sugar Is the Biggest Threat

A sugary boil-over that isn’t cleaned up quickly can etch or pit the glass surface once it cools and hardens, in a way plain water or oil spills generally won’t. Wiping sugar spills while the surface is still warm (not hot) prevents most of this damage.

Dragging Cookware

Sliding heavy cast-iron or enameled pans across the surface, rather than lifting and placing them, is one of the most common causes of fine scratching we see on induction glass over time.

Cookware Compatibility

Non-induction-compatible cookware won’t damage the surface directly, but repeatedly triggering the cooktop’s pan-detection error by using the wrong cookware type is a common source of “is my cooktop broken” calls that turn out to be a cookware mismatch.
